From its foundation by Constantine the Great (4th cent.) until its sack by the Crusaders (1204), Constantinople possessed a unique collection of ancient sculptures. It mainly consisted in works of art dating to before the 4th cent., artefacts that had been transported to adorn the capital from cities and sanctuaries throughout the Roman Empire. |
