According to the tradition, the Soumela Monastery in Pontos was built in the 4th century by two monks from Athens, Barnabas and Sophronios. The monastery was thriving during the Age of the Grand Komnenoi of Trebizond, mainly in 1286-1390. In the Ottoman period the monastery maintained its Orthodox character and lots of its privileges. After the 17th century it thrived again, as a result of the prosperity in the wider area. It was deserted after 1922. |
