Alexios I Grand Komnenos

Alexios I Grand Komnenos (20/1/2006 v.1) Αλέξιος Α΄ Μέγας Κομνηνός (14/10/2005 v.1)

Founder of the dynasty of the Grand Komnenoi and first Emperor of Trebizond. Together with his brother, David Komnenos, and supported by the queen of Georgia, Thamar, they captured Trebizond effortless in 1204. He was then proclaimed emperor of the new-founded state with this Pontic city as its capital. He remained in power until his death, on the Sunday of Orthodoxy of 1222.

Alexios II Grand Komnenos

Alexios II Grand Komnenos (20/1/2006 v.1) Αλέξιος Β΄ Μέγας Κομνηνός (14/10/2005 v.1)

Member of the dynasty of the Grand Komnenoi and emperor of Trebizond. Born in 1283. In 1297 he succeeded his father John II to the throne of Trebizond and remained emperor until his death (1330). He is also known as Alexios Palaiologos and Alexios Komnenos.

Alexios III Grand Komnenos

Alexios III Grand Komnenos (20/1/2006 v.1) Αλέξιος Γ΄ Μέγας Κομνηνός (14/10/2005 v.1)

Member of the dynasty of the Grand Komnenoi and emperor of Trebizond (1349/50-1390). Alexios III Grand Komnenos rose to the throne after a long period of exile in Constantinople. The first year of his reign were marked by rebellions and conspiracies. He was confronted with a number of external threats, such as the Turcoman attacks, which he successfully handled with his intermarriage policy, and the rivalry between the Genoese and Venetian merchants. He died in 20 March 1390.

Alexios IV Grand Komnenos (20/1/2006 v.1) Αλέξιος Δ΄ Μέγας Κομνηνός (14/10/2005 v.1)

Member of the dynasty of the Grand Komnenoi and emperor of Trebizond (1417-1429). In 1396 Alexios IV was made co-emperor and he assumed power in 1417. In 1429 he was murdered by members of the local aristocracy during the rebellion of his son John, the future John IV Grand Komnenos.

Andronikos I Grand Komnenos

Andronikos I Grand Komnenos (20/1/2006 v.1) Ανδρόνικος Α΄ Μέγας Κομνηνός (14/10/2005 v.1)

Member of the dynasty of the Grand Komnenoi. In 1222 he succeeded Alexios I Grand Komnenos to the throne of Trebizond. In 1223 he defeated the Seljuk army, temporarily freeing the Empire of Trebizond from the control of the Seljuk Turks. He died in 1235. Andronikos I Grand Komnenos can possibly be identified as Andronikos Komnenos Gidos, who had been strategos of Theodore I Laskaris of Nicaea.

Emperor of Trebizond, born into the dynasty of the Grand Komnenoi. In 1263 he acceded to the throne of Trebizond, where he remained until his death in 1266.

Andronikos II Palaiologos (1282-1328) was the second son of Michael VIII and Theodora Palaiologina. During his reign he carried out military and administrative reforms, while he repudiated the union of the Orthodox Church with the Papacy, carried out by his father Michael VIII. He proceeded to a judicial reform and greatly contributed to the flourishing in art and the letters which came to be known as "Palaiologan Renaissance". Descendant of the family of the Grand Komnenoi. In 1330 he succeeded his father, Alexios II (1297-1330), on the throne of the Empire of Trebizond. He passed away on January 8, 1332.

Anna Anachoutlou (20/1/2006 v.1) Άννα Αναχουτλού (14/10/2005 v.1)

Anna Anachoutlou, the eldest daughter of Alexios II Grand Komnenos, despite of her being a nun, took political action by mounting resistance in Lazica against Eirene Palaiologina (1340-1341). Taking advantage of the attacks launched by the Türkmen of Amida, she ascended to the throne of Trebizond. In 1342 she was strangled by the usurper to the throne, John, subsequently John III Grand Komnenos (1342-1344).
