Mixed Council
Mixed council consisting from priests and laymen. It has been instituted by the General Regulations of 1862 and it was one of the two superior administrative bodies of the Patriarchate of Constantinople. Four of the members of the Council were bishops and eight were laymen, while its president was usually the superior bishop. The counsil was responsible for the supervision of schools, hospitals and other public walfare institutions of Constantinople, but also of the monasteries of the Patriarchate. Furthermore, it was responsible for the judicial cases of the Orthodox population about dowries and testaments. The activity of the Council came to an end in 1923.
